A huge thank you to everyone who has supported our school these last seven months!!

Whether it was chaperoning field trips, setting up for school events, assisting teachers in classrooms, building a new playground, hanging artwork on the walls of the school, bagging popcorn for Popcorn Fridays, making meals for teacher appreciation events, celebrating weekly Panther Paw winners, or any of the billion or so other volunteer jobs that help Madrona Elementary thrive -- your time and energy have made a difference for our school!

It's hard to believe, but we are now in the home stretch of the 2017-18 school year.  We have a ton of fun and engaging activities planned for students and families over the next 12 weeks, and WE'RE GONNA NEED YOUR HELP to make it all happen.

Below is a more or less chronological list of upcoming volunteer opportunities.  For most activities, you can click on the hyperlink underneath the description to sign up for a shift online. You can also just reply to this email to RSVP for any event or to let us know how you'd like to help.  Please note: if you've received this message in error, or no longer wish to volunteer at Madrona, please let us know, and we'll take you off our email list.

Disney Work Parties

A dedicated crew of 3rd-5th graders have been hard at work since early January, preparing a production of "The Lion King" through the Disney Musicals in Schools program. The show is coming up on Thursday, April 26th at 6pm, but there's still so much to do before then!  Parent and Madrona PTSA Arts Chair Anya Rudnick is producing the show, and she has organized two work parties to tackle making props, building scenery, and helping with painting, lighting, sound, and childcare.  No theater experience is necessary, just a willingness to help out however's needed.  Come for as little or as long as you can, and bring your friends and family!

Saturday, April 14 | 9am-4pm

Saturday, April 21 | 9am-4pm

RSVP to anyarudnick@gmail.com or 310.621.4978, or just show up when you can.

After School Program Support

Madrona runs a fun, dynamic after-school enrichment program for our students under the direction of Steven Baldock (aka Mr. B), and we can always use more help!  Volunteers must be comfortable with a flexible, unpredictable schedule and enjoy working with elementary-age kids.

Primary duties include assisting with snack preparation and supporting teachers with lessons and classroom management.

You can email Mr. B at stbaldock@seattleschools.org with any questions.

Spring Session runs April 16-June 21.

Greatest needs are Wednesdays 1-2:45pm and 2-4:45pm.

Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays 2-4:45pm are also available.

**Note: Ms. Sharon (aka PTSA Co-President Sharon Safarik) is seeking 1-2 volunteers specifically to help with her Sewing Class on Wednesdays from 2:30-3:45pm. Email her at mcconnell.sharon@gmail.com for more info.**

Panther Paw Drawings

Students collect "Panther Paws" for following the Panther PATH, and every Friday morning we hold a drawing to announce that week's winner for each classroom. We also draw a random teacher's name and celebrate them with a $5 coffee card and a Madrona mug. Volunteers are needed to collect Paw Boxes, write student names on certificates, read student and teacher names over the intercom, present students with certificates, and take a celebratory photo of students in front of the "We Follow the Panther Path" poster in the lobby.

Staff Appreciation Luncheons

Our teachers and staff work so hard to support our students, so on the third Wednesday of every month from 10:30am-12pm, we hold a Staff Appreciation Potluck to recognize all they do.  Parent and Outdoor Club Leader Samara Louton has agreed to coordinate our April potluck, which will be a taco bar.  Please sign up to make or bring some taco fixins' for the potluck and help celebrate our teachers and staff!  We also need two volunteers to help set up and clean up the potluck.

Wednesday, April 18 | 10am-12:30pm

Contact Sam at smlouton@yahoo.com to RSVP or click here to sign up online to bring food for the April potluck.

**Note: If you're interested in coordinating Teacher Appreciation Week activities (May 7-11) or organizing the June potluck (June 20), please contact Volunteer Co-Coordinator Sarah Kent at MadronaVolunteers@gmail.com.**

Bullpup-Panther Classic Basketball Game

Join Madrona and Leschi Elementary schools for some friendly neighborhood fun on the basketball court at the 2nd Annual Bullpup-Panther Classic! The game will take place Thursday, April 19 from 5-6pm. Teams are made up of both staff and parents, so if you're interested in joining the Madrona squad, please contact PTSA Co-President Nathan Hoerschelmann ASAP at nhoerschelmann@gmail.com, so you have time to practice with the team!  There's a suggested donation of $5 per person at the game, with proceeds benefiting both schools.  We'll also have concessions, pompoms, and Madrona merch for sale.  Volunteers are needed to help with set-up, ticket sales, concessions, and clean-up.

SBAC Breakfast

Every year, Madrona hosts a Breakfast for 3rd-5th grade students and their families to celebrate their hard work in preparing for the statewide SBAC exams.  This year's breakfast will be held on Tuesday, April 24th from 8-9am in the Gym, and it will feature inspirational speaker Erin Jones, who was the first Black woman candidate for statewide office in Washington in 2016, as our Keynote Speaker.  Volunteers are needed to help set up tables and chairs the night before, serve food during the event, and clean up afterwards. Because the families of older kids are invited guests at the breakfast, we ask our K-2 families and community volunteers to step up that day if possible.  Members of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will also help serve food that day.

Monday, April 23 | 4-5pm (set-up)

Tuesday, April 24 | 7:45-9:30am (food service/clean-up)

Mayfair Hotdog Stand

Mayfair is an annual neighborhood celebration of Spring, which will take place at Madrona Playground Saturday, May 12, 9:30am-1pm. This year, Madrona Elementary will host a hotdog stand during the event.  We will also have a school information table and sell playground bricks and pavers and other Madrona merchandise.  We need volunteers to help make and sell hotdogs ... and to tell fair-goers about our awesome school and convince them to support us with their dollars!

Yearbook Committee

This is our first year as an elementary school, and we are hoping to make a yearbook that is free or low-cost, so that every student can have a copy. Parents Mascha Kroenlein and Charles Peterson have volunteered to head up this effort, but they need more people to help.  Specifically, they are hoping to find a parent with design software and design experience to help put it together.  Please contact Mascha (maschakroenlein@hotmail.com ) and Charles (charles@charlespeterson.net)  to join the committee.  Stay tuned for more details in a future volunteer update!

2nd Annual Madrona Family Fish Fry

Save the date! Our Spring fundraiser will take place on Thursday, May 31 on the school playground, and it will take a village to make it happen.  If you'd like to join the planning committee, please email parent and PTSA Legislative Chair Adam Rakunas at rak@giro.org for more information.  Stay tuned for more details in a future volunteer update!

Science Fair

Save the Date!  Help make our 4th Annual Science Fair a reality.  We need several more people to join our planning committee to help organize the science fair on Thursday, June 14. We also need judges on the day of the fair and people to work with students on Wednesdays during early release (1-2:30pm) to prepare their projects.  To join the planning committee, contact Ms. Sharon at mcconnell.sharon@gmail.com.  Stay tuned for more detail in a future volunteer update!

Drop Everything And Read (aka D.E.A.R.)

The PTSA collects donated, age-appropriate books throughout the school year and gives them away to students during the last week of school to help combat the Summer Slide in reading progress.  We need volunteers to help pick up books from donation sites over the next three months, sort and organize them by reading level the week before the event, and help students choose appropriate titles during the event.  To join the planning committee, contact Sarah Kent at madronavolunteers@gmail.com. Stay tuned for more details in a future volunteer update!

Last, but certainly not least ...

The Madrona Panther Partners PTSA supports our students and staff in many important ways, and we want and need to grow our mighty crew and ensure that our membership reflects the beautiful diversity of our school.  YOU can and should have a voice in what we do.  Later in April, the PTSA will set up a budget committee to plan for next year.  In May, we will elect new co-chairs to lead next year's PTSA Board.  Our various committee needs include people to help with: communications/website maintenance, volunteers, arts-infused education, family engagement, community outreach, PBIS support, school events planning, fundraising, staff appreciation activities, legislative advocacy, organizing the family resource center, keeping the school and grounds beautiful, providing after-school support, supporting special education families, and more. Come be a part of the action!  Meetings are the first Wednesday of every month from 6:30-8pm in the computerlab.  We also meet for Coffee at the Hi-Spot on the second Tuesday of every month from 8-9am.  All families are welcome to participate as much or as little as they want.  We encourage YOU to take part in making our school a better place for everyone!

**Check out our new website at madronaptsa.org or join our Facebook group "Friends and Family of Madrona Elementary."  For more information, you can also contact PTSA Co-Presidents Sharon Safarik and Nathan Hoerschelmann via email at President@madronaptsa.org.**
