Volunteering at Madrona Elementary

The Madrona PTSA believes we are a stronger school community when we all work together to support our students, staff, and each other.  We value the diverse skill-sets and life experiences that our parents, families, and community members bring to our school, and we strive to make volunteering accessible to all who have time and talents to share.  Our goal is to make sure that every Madrona community member knows how to get involved and feels welcome to do so, as much or as little as they want to and are able.

How to get started …

  • 3rd Annual Madrona Fish Fry | Friday, May 31 | 5-8pm | School Playground
Community, Food & Student Music Performances
Madrona's 3rd Annual Fish Fry is Friday, May 31st on the School Playground.  The Fish Fry is a community event this year, nota fundraiser.  Tickets are pay-what-you-can at the door.  There is a suggested donation of $10 per adult and $5 per child, but no one will be turned away if they're unable to pay.  An event poster with more information will be sent home in student backpacks, posted around the school, and shared on our Facebook page in the coming weeks. We will serve fried fish and coleslaw, along with roasted corn and other fixins'.  K-5 students will also be performing during the Fish Fry!  This concert is the culmination of their work with Adefua, the West African Drumming, Dance & Culture group, during music classes in May. Volunteers are needed to help set up and cook 2-5pm, serve food and run the PTSA Table in shifts 5-8pm, and clean up 8-9pm.

We are currently recruiting members of the community to work with students as Science Fair judges in two shifts on Tuesday, June 18 (8:30-10:30am and 12-2pm). No experience is necessary, but an interest in science and willingness to engage children in conversation are appreciated. Volunteers are also needed to help run our evening event, including set-up, serving dinner, assisting at community demonstration sessions, and clean-up. Please click here to sign up today!

  • Classroom Support | Various dates & Times

    • Volunteers are needed to assist Ms. Schwochow's kindergartners with their Scholar Math and Reading lessons.  Volunteers will work 1-on-1 or in small groups to support students.  Scholar Reading is Monday though Friday from 9:20 to 9:50am.  Scholar Math is Monday through Friday from 11:40-12:10am.  Parents must complete the SPS online volunteer application and background check process before volunteering in class.

  • Join the Family Resource Center Team
Madrona's volunteer-run Family Resource Center recently saw an influx of food and clothing donations.  Thanks to our generous school community, families experiencing hardship will have access to items they need this winter!  Volunteers are needed to help organize and hang up donations by size and type, wash items that need laundering in our on-site facility, separate and deliver items that can't be used to Goodwill, and arrange the shelf-stable foods for easier access.  This work can be done whenever is convenient for you while the school building is open (M-F | 7:30am-6pm).  Please contact Family Resource Center Co-Chair Gwen Kiehne at gwen.kiehne@gmail.com with any questions.

    Volunteer Orientations

Thanks to everyone who attended one of our eight Parent & Family Volunteer Orientation sessions in the Fall.  Orientations are a great way to learn more about Madrona and some of the systems our teachers and staff use to help our students learn and grow.  We don't have any more orientations scheduled at this time, but Volunteer Co-Coordinators Ginger and Sarah are available to meet with volunteers 1-on-1 as needed.  If you would like to learn more about volunteering, please email us at: volunteer@madronaptsa.org or call/text Sarah at 206.669.5749.
